Casanova Foto, Barcelona

Post by Ashley_Pomeroy »

I was on holiday in Barcelona last week, and I popped into Casanova Foto, which is a photo store just off the Placa Catalunya (the town centre). It's the only place I've seen modern Zeiss 35mm lenses for sale, and I had a good look at the 21mm f/2.8, which didn't have a price tag because that's the kind of store it is. The Zeiss section is right next to the Leica section which is just across from the Hasselblad section.

There's also a large selection of used gear - lots of old Canon EOS 1Ns for pennies, and old 1Dses for not a great deal more. Around the back, right around the back next to some old TLRs and Rolleis, they had a few Kodak DCS models. There was a DCS 410, a DCS 315/330 - I didn't check - and a DCS 760, sort of on the floor, unloved. There was also a 14n with box, although the 14n looked a bit worn. Again, no prices. You could probably scour the shop and make up a thorough "history of digital SLRs" museum exhibit from the stock.

The website also lists a Pro Back Plus although I didn't see it. About 2,000 Euros. It seems to me that the Pro Back Plus has gone the way of the Leica S1 Pro in another post; it's too expensive to sell, but it can't be priced any cheaper because that would just seem wrong. And there might just be one working professional who needs it. It's a shame no-one posts sample images from these old cameras; the only big samples of the Pro Back I can find were at Steve's Digicams, but they all looked blurred, as if taken hand-held.

Here's a Leica MP Hermes Edition, a snip at 8,000 Euros:

Sounds like a fun shop :-)

The MP Hermes edition is a bargain compared to the £19,800 Leica M9 Titanium:

At least they made a few changes, anyway, instead of just making the top out of titanium. Leica's special editions always remind me of the gold cameras of yore:

I was about to say "at least Leica hasn't made a gold camera, they would never stoop to that", but they have:

That's the "Leica M6 Sultan of Negeri Brunei Darussalam Silver jubilee GOLD Edition". You'd think it would be silver, but no. Apparently no more expensive used than the M9 Titanium is new. I just can't picture a device with an LCD screen and an SD card socket and a USB port as a valuable antique; it'll be as obsolete in a few years as the company's film cameras are today.

Then again, it's cheaper than a brand-new Kodak DCS 420.

Hi,

I'm waiting for the R8 or R9 with DMR to achieve the 'obsolete' prices which the Kodak DCS line has reached.

I expect I'm in for a long wait!

But, I'd love to have the Kodak CCD that the DMR contains. I've always felt it was a danged shame that Kodak never put that one into the F5 design to make a DCS-811.....

Not that the Leica glass will likely ever come down in price. That I could live with if I could get the 'DSLR' part for low enough cost....

Later!
