Kodak Nikon vs Canon mount production numbers?

Post by NikonWeb »

Inspired by the recent Canon D2000 thread, I began to wonder how many Nikon vs Canon mount Kodak DSLR cameras were made. Undoubtedly, there were many more Nikon based models, and I assume that a lot more Nikon based bodies were sold. However, I can't be certain. I've asked Kodak, which have been very helpful with similar requests in the past. Unfortunately, this time they couldn't - or wouldn't - help: "..regrettably, we're not able to assist you with your inquiry".

Depending on how you count, there were at least 12 different Nikon models (and many, many different variants), but only five Canon mount models:

DCS 3 (16.4 mm x 20.5 sensor first Canon-based DSLR, July 1995)
DCS 1 (18.4 x 27.6 mm sensor - December 1995)
DCS 5 (9.2 mm x 13.8 mm sensor - date?)
DCS 520 / EOS D2000 (March 1998)
DCS 560 / EOS D6000 (December 1998)

See here for an earlier thread about Kodak Nikon mount DSLR numbers: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24

Anyone?

Hi,
In my DCS survey out of 333 cameras there are 92 Canons (against 241 Nikons), and 75 of those are later 500-series bodies.

Don't forget the later Pro-SLR/c.

Thanks Jonathan.

I can imagine that Canon mount bodies became more popular with the later 500-series, like your survey indicates. I realize I wrote "Canon mount bodies", but personally I'm mostly interested in the older models (pre-Pro-SLR/x). The SLR/c didn't even use a Canon body (not that it matters much).

Your numbers indicates approx. 2.6 times as many Nikon cameras, which sounds plausible. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if the difference is even larger, but it can also be the opposite.

What sources do you use for your survey? For example, do you actively monitor cameras offered on eBay? That would perhaps be a good indicator about the relationship between the two brands, although we can't know for sure. E.g. Nikon (or Canon) owners may be more reluctant to sell their old cameras, meaning we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg. We really need some hard facts to know for sure.

I keep an eye on ebay worldwide (you can set up searches that email you if a prticular thing is listed), plus lots of other people have added cameras so many thanks to them! I've also found other numbers on the net & on the Kodak site.

Compare also the 333 DCS numbers to the 4 Minolta RD-175 bodies I have found!
